Priorities

School board directors work together to guide the school district’s strategy

The Renton School district serves 15,000 pre-K through 12th grade students from Renton, Newcastle, Bellevue, Kent, Tukwila, Seattle, and unincorporated King County, across legislative districts 5, 11, 33, 37, and 41

Together as a board, we are responsible for:

  • Evaluating and hiring the superintendent of schools

  • Setting the vision, mission, and goals for the district

  • Adopting, reviewing, and revising policies

  • Overseeing and approving the budget:

    • $278M general fund expenditures FY20-21

    • $116M capital projects fund expenditures FY 20-21

  • Monitoring the district’s progress towards goals

Director Scovel’s Focus Areas

Early Childhood Education

Increasing access and affordability so more students are kindergarten-ready, and focusing on those furthest away from educational justice.

Mental Health & Wellness

Continuing the emphasis on social emotional learning and skills to build resiliency, self-confidence, and empathy.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Committing to the ABAR (anti-bias, anti-racist) journey so that all students and employees have the opportunities and environment to thrive.

Growth Mindset &
A Culture of Innovation

Providing exposure to a broad set of opportunities, and focusing on critical thinking and re-thinking skills. Encouraging educators and staff to identify opportunities, pilot ideas, accept misses and celebrate wins, and share learnings.

Customer Experience Mindset

Creating a focus on student experience, employee experience, and parent/caregiver experience. Assessing We ourselves often and celebrating the wins, but always seeking to understand how we can improve.
